Sarah contacted TLS (The Loft Specialists) after considering extending her home in Chorlton south Manchester following an increase in demand for her childminding service.
Sarah wanted to stay in the home she loved but desperately needed another bedroom with en-suite bathroom following the conversion of the current master bedroom into a second play room / office.
Sarah knew she would need to extend the existing roof shape with a dormer window as she had spent some time up in the loft trying to imagine what type of space could be achieved, however she knew that a large flat roof dormer would not be aesthetically pleasing on her period property. Following a consultation with a specialists designer from TLS loft conversions a beautiful ridged dormer design was found to be the very best solution to her needs for more space with the emphasis on looks.
This design would allow for a real extension from the existing house layout into the new second floor loft rooms (bedroom and en-suite) that really made her feel comfortable with the external looks.
Sarah had one further concern, the fact she worked from home along with 5 children, the thought of a major building project taking upto 8 weeks surely it wouldn't be impossible to continue working from home.
On all of our projects we cover your property with what we call a tent scaffold. This structure comes off the scaffold access platforms, rises up and over the existing roof and is then covered with a water and wind proof material so when we remove any part of the roof your home is protected, also our teams can continue to work even in the typically bad Manchester weather, so we can keep to timescales we promise. Our teams then enter your house and loft from the scaffold and all materials needed are lifted up onto the scaffold then delivered into the loft area through the roof following the sealing off the original access in your home. At this point there is only one way into the loft, from the outside it is not possible to come from the house and go up into the loft.
On a typical 8 week project this is how we work for the first 6-7 weeks. By now the dormer windows and any other Velux windows have been installed into the roof, the internal works (electrical and plumbing requirements, insulating and plaster boarding, even installation of the bathroom furniture and tiling of the bathroom has been completed.)
Obviously there comes a point when we must make the connection from old to new (the new loft staircase, and surrounding works). We at TLS believe this to be the most important part of any loft conversion. This process takes approximately 7-10 days.
With Sarah's project and considering her working day we completed this work over three weekends leaving her house free during the week so as not to disrupt her working day. This process may not be for you, but this is exactly what Sarah wanted. Should you decide to have the final parts of the works completed consecutively we would complete this within 7 -10 days dependant on style.
"“Thank you TLS, completely pleased with the results both outside and in. There is now much more room for the children to play safely and it has given my home a much more family feeling. The men were really efficient and careful around the house, the new room looks super! Thanks again”" Sarah.
